About This Song
"Marvins Room" arrived without a conventional rollout. Drake posted the track to his October's Very Own blog in June 2011, weeks before any formal single announcement, and the response was immediate enough that Young Money, Cash Money and Universal Republic issued it commercially on July 22, 2011, as the lead single from Take Care. The song is credited to Drake as lead vocalist, with Adrian Eccleston on guitar, Chilly Gonzales on piano, and Noah "40" Shebib handling production and programming. Singer Ericka Lee contributes vocals without a credit on the original release.
Shebib's beat is built from little more than a muted bass figure and sustained keyboard chords, leaving room for a lyric that plays out as a drunk-dial. Drake spends the verses airing grievances at an ex, recalling shared history and pressing her to leave her current partner. The conversational, unguarded delivery was a departure from the bravado of his mixtape era, and it set the tone for the moody, self-scrutinizing R&B that dominated Take Care.
Commercially the single reached No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and entered the top 10 of Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Its afterlife has been longer than its chart run: remixes by Chris Brown, JoJo and Lil Wayne circulated widely, and the song has stayed in Drake's live rotation. On October 23, 2026, Billboard reported that Drake had become the first act to pass 350 million RIAA-certified units, with "Marvins Room" named among the 30 new certifications in that batch.
