Sabrina Carpenter released "Manchild" on June 5, 2025 as the lead single from her sixth studio album Man's Best Friend, which followed on August 29, 2025 through Island Records. The song was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City and runs 3:33 in length. A 7-inch vinyl single included the instrumental B-side "Inside of Your Head When You've Just Won an Argument with a Man."

The track was co-written by Carpenter, Amy Allen, and Jack Antonoff, who also handled production. The trio had previously worked together on Carpenter's 2024 hit "Please Please Please." Antonoff's production blends disco glitter with synth-pop bounce and a twang of country sass, shifting influence prominence from section to section. Country elements appear notably in the pre-chorus and instrumental break, while the chorus balances multiple influences to reinforce the hook.

Lyrics deliver a pointed, witty critique of an immature ex-boyfriend, with lines like "Why so sexy if so dumb? / And how survive the earth so long? / If I'm not there, it won't get done / I choose to blame your mom." Carpenter described the song as "the song embodiment of a loving eye roll" that feels like "a never ending road trip in the summer." Despite fan speculation linking it to her ex-boyfriend Barry Keoghan, Carpenter wrote the song before their December 2024 breakup, suggesting it may not be about any specific real person.

The official music video, directed by Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia, was filmed in May 2025 in Santa Clarita, California and released on June 6, 2025. Inspired by the fast-paced editing of movie trailers, it shows Carpenter hitchhiking across the American West with a diverse group of men using unusual transportation including a jet ski, a shopping cart attached to a motorcycle, and a motorized recliner chair.
