Maggots for Brains

Olivia Rodrigo's "Maggots for Brains" marks a decisive break from the pop-punk of her earlier records, sliding into a post-punk and new wave groove on her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. Released June 12, 2026, by Geffen Records, the track was co-written by Rodrigo, Dan Nigro, and Amy Allen, with Nigro producing. Its jangly guitars and taut, propulsive rhythm call back to early 1980s UK indie, a sound Rodrigo had not fully explored before.

The song's title is a deliberate twist on the idiom "worms for brains," pushed to a more visceral extreme. Rodrigo told interviewers the idea came from the Sex and the City relationship between Miranda Hobbes and Steve Brady, whose on-again, off-again dynamic she found ripe for exploring the feeling of being so consumed by someone that your mind seems to rot. The lyrics paint a narrator who is practically catatonic without her partner, unable to think clearly, trapped in a spiral of lovesickness and codependency. "Maggots for brains" is her way of saying love has turned her into a zombie.

Critics took notice. Rolling Stone called the song a "gorgeous guitar ballad" and noted a subtle nod to Pavement's 1992 track "Here." Dazed picked it as one of the five best songs on the album, which the outlet suggested might be Rodrigo's best yet. The album itself debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, but "Maggots for Brains" was never released as a single, so it has no separate chart run.
