I Won't Say (I'm in Love)

Susan Egan delivers a sassy, soulful performance as Megara in this mid-tempo anthem from Disney's 1997 animated feature Hercules. Released on May 27, 1997, the track marked a sharp stylistic departure for the studio by swapping sweeping ballads for rhythm and blues sounds rooted in 1960s doo-wop and Motown. The song serves as a defiant moment where Meg refuses to admit her romantic feelings for Hercules despite their undeniable chemistry.

The production team originally titled the piece I Can't Believe My Heart, but they scrapped the slower draft because it failed to capture Megara's cynical personality. Alan Menken reworked the composition into a vibrant number featuring powerful gospel-tinged harmonies provided by a renowned ensemble of backing vocalists who also portray the Muses within the film's narrative. Critics often highlight this track as the standout musical number from the movie due to its clever lyrics and unique arrangement. [edit]
