I Need U

April 29, 2015 marked a shift in direction for BTS when they released I Need U as the lead single from their third extended play, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1. The track moved away from the high-energy pop and hip-hop of their earlier work to embrace a rawer, more emotional style that blended alternative hip-hop with soulful elements. Producers Pdogg and Supreme Boi crafted the soundscape using whistling synths and reverberating hi-hats to match lyrics about young love, anxiety, and the fear of loss.

Critics immediately recognized the song's departure from polished perfection. Billboard later highlighted the track in 2019 as one of the songs that defined the decade for the group, praising its expressive vocals and dynamic arrangement. The release earned BTS their first win on a South Korean music show, specifically M Countdown, validating their new artistic direction and establishing them as serious contenders in the domestic scene beyond their initial idol image.
