The track was produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, whose work helped refine the band's raw sound for international audiences. Although the single initially peaked at number 49 on the US Billboard Hot 100, its legacy grew massively after Scott's death in February 1980. In 2000, the Recording Industry Association of America certified the single Platinum for sales exceeding one million copies in the United States.

Cultural impact extended far beyond the charts. The official music video directed by Brian Grant features the band performing in a gritty industrial setting. This visual has amassed hundreds of millions of views on YouTube. The song appears in films like Iron Man 2 and countless television shows.
