Fortnight

The lead single from Taylor Swift's eleventh studio album The Tortured Poets Department, "Fortnight" arrived on April 19, 2024 via Republic Records. Written solely by Swift and produced alongside her longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff, the song is a downtempo electropop track steeped in 1980s synth-pop and new wave textures. A steady, pulsing synthesizer bassline anchors the arrangement, while the outro layers Swift and Post Malone's voices into a harmonized fade. Lyrically, it paints a wistful portrait of a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage who reconnects with a former lover, dreaming of escape and reckoning with the emotional wreckage of a brief but consuming affair.

Commercially, "Fortnight" shattered expectations. It debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Swift's twelfth chart-topper and Post Malone's sixth. The song also set a Spotify record for the biggest single-day streaming debut, racking up over 25.2 million global streams in its first 24 hours. It topped charts in Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, and the UK, where it became Swift's twelfth number-one single. The RIAA certified it Platinum within months, with similar certifications in Canada and the UK.

The black-and-white music video, directed by Swift and released the same day, features cameos from actors Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles. As of early 2025 it has surpassed 100 million YouTube views. Critical reception was generally positive, with Pitchfork calling it "a moody, synth-driven ballad" and Rolling Stone noting it "captures the essence of the album's themes of longing and regret." The Guardian found the production "muted," while NME described it as "a slow-burner that rewards repeated listens." The song went on to win Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards and Best Collaboration at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.[edit]
