About This Song
The whistling hook hit first. Then the neon green hair. In July 2018, 6ix9ine dropped "Fefe" with Nicki Minaj and Murda Beatz, a minimal, bouncy dirty rap track that turned into one of the summer's biggest songs. Written by 6ix9ine, Minaj, Murda Beatz, Andrew Green, and the production duo Cubeatz, the song was released through TenThousand Projects as the second single from 6ix9ine's debut album Dummy Boy. Minaj later added it to streaming editions of her fourth album Queen.
"Fefe" debuted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to number three, becoming 6ix9ine's highest-charting single at the time. It went top ten in Australia, Canada, Hungary, New Zealand, Sweden, and Switzerland. The RIAA certified it 5x Platinum in February 2020. The music video, directed by TrifeDrew and 6ix9ine, features cartoonish neon club visuals and has surpassed 1.1 billion views on YouTube.
Critics were split. Pitchfork called it "a dumb, fun summer jam," while Rolling Stone praised its "irresistible hook." Others questioned the ethics of promoting a song by an artist facing serious legal charges. The track sparked dance challenges on TikTok and Instagram, and its whistling melody became a meme staple. Despite 6ix9ine's later incarceration, "Fefe" remains his most recognizable hit.
