Escapism

On October 12, 2022, Raye and 070 Shake released Escapism as a standalone single independent of any major label. The track arrived alongside its companion piece, The Thrill Is Gone, marking a defiant moment in the British singer's career after her split from Polydor Records. This dual release signaled a shift toward total creative control, with Human Re Sources handling distribution through The Orchard.

The song blends heavy, distorted basslines with trap-influenced beats to create a soundscape that feels both melancholic and danceable. Arca and TMS produced the track, crafting an atmosphere where upbeat instrumentation contrasts sharply with lyrics about using substances to cope with heartbreak. Raye wrote the lyrics and melody, while 070 Shake delivered a featured verse that adds a layer of raw vulnerability to the narrative.

Critics immediately recognized the track's impact, citing it as one of the best songs of 2022 for its honest portrayal of emotional numbness. The song's success helped propel Raye's debut album, My 21st Century Blues, which followed in November 2023. It became a defining record of the era, resonating with audiences who found solace in its depiction of post-breakup survival strategies. [edit]
