    About This Song

"Enter Sandman" launched Metallica into a stratosphere few metal bands ever reach. Released July 29, 1991, as the lead single from their fifth album, the one everybody calls The Black Album, it rewrote the rules for how heavy a radio hit could be. James Hetfield wrote the lyrics after obsessing over childhood nightmares and the folklore of the sandman who sprinkles sleep dust. But instead of a lullaby, he conjured a creeping dread: "Exit light, enter night / Take my hand, we're off to never-never land."

The song's anatomy is deceptively simple. Kirk Hammett's opening riff, a four-note descent played on a wah-wah pedal, became an instant calling card. Producer Bob Rock pushed the band to strip away the thrash complexity of earlier records, focusing on groove and space. Lars Ulrich's drum pattern is a steady, almost hypnotic beat, while Jason Newsted's bass rumbles underneath like a distant earthquake. Hetfield's vocal delivery shifts from a whispered verse to a full-throated roar on the chorus, a dynamic range the band had rarely explored before.

Chart success followed quickly: number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 5 in the UK, top 10 across Europe and Australia. The music video, directed by Wayne Isham, intercut the band performing in a dark, dreamlike space with surreal nightmare imagery, a swinging pendulum, a shadowy figure in a bed, a child's terrified face. It became an MTV staple. By the end of 1992, the song had won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Metal/Hard Rock Video and been nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Song.

Over three decades later, "Enter Sandman" remains Metallica's most played live song and an undeniable gateway into heavy metal for millions of listeners. Its opening riff still packs stadiums, and its cultural footprint extends far beyond music, used as entrance music by athletes like baseball closer Trevor Hoffman, covered by everyone from Motörhead to the string quartet Vitamin String Quartet, and referenced endlessly in film, television, and video games.
