About This Song
Some songs take years to find an audience. Dame Tu Cosita took two decades. El Chombo, the Panamanian producer born Rodney Clark, recorded the track in the late 1990s with Jamaican dancehall veteran Cutty Ranks on vocals. Then it sat on a shelf, a regional curiosity from Panama's bubbling reggaeton underground. When a reworked version finally hit streaming platforms in April 2018, it spread like a virus, first as a dance challenge on Musical.ly, then across YouTube, where the official video would eventually approach 3.5 billion views.
The hook does most of the work. A few words, a stuttering "ah ah," a beat that locks into your skull and refuses to leave. It was built for looping, which made it perfect for the meme economy. But there is real history underneath the novelty: Cutty Ranks was a genuine dancehall heavyweight in the 1990s, and El Chombo had spent years documenting and shaping Panama's reggaeton scene before this track brought him worldwide attention. The 2018 version kept the raw dancehall energy of the original while cleaning up the production for clubs and headphones.
By August 2018, a remix featuring Pitbull and Karol G, with Cutty Ranks still on board, pushed the song further into the mainstream. Ultra Records handled the release, and the animated green alien from the video became a recognizable character in its own right. Critics sometimes waved it off as a novelty, but the numbers told a different story. And the story is not over: in early 2026, Cutty Ranks filed a US$3 million lawsuit over unpaid royalties, turning a viral triumph into a legal battleground.
