On October 28, 2016, Shakira and Maluma released "Chantaje" as the lead single from her album El Dorado. The title translates to "blackmail," and the lyrics play out as a flirtatious standoff where neither singer wants to admit their feelings first. Over a dembow beat, the track blends pop with reggaeton, marking Shakira's full embrace of the Latin urban sound that was dominating global charts. The chemistry between the two Colombian stars is immediate, their voices trading lines like a playful argument.

The song was written by Shakira, Maluma, Juan Camilo Vargas, and the production duo The Rude Boyz, who also produced it. It became one of the biggest Latin hits of the decade. On the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, it spent 11 weeks at number one. In Spain, it hit number one and earned a 7x Platinum certification. The RIAA gave it 8x Platinum (Latin) in the US.
