When Ariana Grande dropped "7 Rings" on January 18, 2019, she turned a Broadway classic into a trap-pop anthem that took over the world. The song samples "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music, and the juxtaposition of that wholesome melody with lyrics about splurging on diamonds and champagne created something both playful and defiant. Grande co-wrote it with Tommy Brown, Charles Anderson, Social House, Victoria Monét, Tayla Parx, Njomza, and Kaydence, with production handled by Brown, Anderson, and Foster. The title comes from a real moment: after her breakup with Pete Davidson, she bought matching engagement rings for herself and six close friends, a gesture of self-love that became the song's core idea.

The track debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, her second consecutive chart-topper after "Thank U, Next." It spent eight non-consecutive weeks at the top and stayed on the chart for 33 weeks. Globally, it hit number one in over 20 countries, including the UK, Australia, and Canada. By December 2019, it had sold more than 13.3 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling digital singles ever. The song also earned a Diamond certification from the RIAA, and by March 2026 it had racked up over 2.7 billion streams on Spotify alone, ranking as the nineteenth most-streamed song on Apple Music.

The music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, is a pink-hued celebration of friendship and excess, featuring Grande and her crew partying in a mansion. It won Best Art Direction at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. The song also picked up Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 62nd ceremony. A remix with 2 Chainz arrived on February 1, 2019. But the song's success came with financial irony: because of the "My Favorite Things" sample, Grande reportedly kept less than 10% of the royalties, with the rest going to the Rodgers and Hammerstein estate.
