About This Album
Dolly Parton dropped her thirty-third solo studio album, Something Special, on August 22, 1995. Columbia Records and her own Blue Eye Records handled the release of a project blending seven new originals with three reworked classics. Producer Steve Buckingham steered the sessions to balance traditional country roots with the polished sound dominating mid-90s radio.
The record centers on a fresh take of "I Will Always Love You" featuring Vince Gill. This duet marked Parton's third recording of the ballad after her 1973 demo and the global smash from The Bodyguard. Released as the lead single later that year, the track climbed to #15 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.
Critics praised the warm production and Parton's ability to reinvent her catalog without losing its soul. The collaboration earned the pair the Vocal Event of the Year award at the 1996 Country Music Association Awards. While other tracks like "Something Special" and "The Seeker" got airplay, none matched the commercial impact of the Vince Gill partnership.
