Solo Camping for Two

On a crisp autumn morning at Lake Motosu, Gen Kakitsu, a meticulous solo camper in his late 20s, is methodically setting up his ultralight tent when a young woman named Shizuka Kusano stumbles into the adjacent site, her brand-new, oversized gear tangled and her confidence wavering. So begins Solo Camping for Two, a manga that redefines togetherness in the outdoors. Rather than a romance or a buddy comedy, Yudai Debata's series explores the quiet art of camping side by side while respecting each other's solitude. Gen, who values self-reliance above all, and Shizuka, a beginner finding her footing, cook separate meals, maintain their own rhythms, and occasionally share a tip or a cup of coffee. The series' episodic chapters teach real camping skills, how to choose a tent, build a fire without lighter fluid, or wrap fish in foil for a lakeside dinner, while gently unfolding the characters' personal growth.

Debata, an avid solo camper himself, packs the manga with brand-name gear from Snow Peak and Montbell, accurate campsite etiquette, and recipes that readers can actually try. The story originally launched in Kodansha's Evening magazine on October 23, 2018, and after that magazine folded in February 2023, it moved to the Comic Days app before settling into Morning in December 2023. Twenty-three tankōbon volumes have been released in Japan as of February 2026, with English digital editions from Kodansha USA starting May 12, 2020. The series has sold over 2.5 million copies in Japan, and its gentle, non-romantic portrayal of a male-female friendship has been widely praised as refreshing.

Two adaptations followed: a live-action drama starring Ryo Narita and Moka Kamishiraishi aired on TV Tokyo from January to February 2025, and a 24-episode anime by SynergySP ran from July to December 2025, with an English dub on Crunchyroll. Beyond the page, Solo Camping for Two sparked a real-world surge in solo and female camping in Japan, led to a Snow Peak cookware collaboration, and turned Lake Motosu and Cape Muroto into pilgrimage sites for fans.
