Snow White

The Brothers Grimm first wrote down "Snow White" in the early 19th century, publishing it in 1812 as Tale 53 in their collection Grimms' Fairy Tales. The original German title, Sneewittchen, was a partial translation from Low German; later editions used Schneewittchen. The story first appeared in English in 1823 as "Snow-Drop" and was also known as "Little Snow-White." The Grimms revised the tale multiple times, with the final version appearing in the 1857 edition. The story runs about 15 pages in most modern printings, though page counts vary widely depending on the edition and illustrations.

At its core, "Snow White" follows a princess whose beauty provokes the envy of her stepmother, the Evil Queen. The Queen orders a huntsman to kill the girl, but Snow White escapes and finds refuge with seven dwarfs in a cottage deep in the woods. The Queen, using a magic mirror to track her stepdaughter, disguises herself and tempts Snow White with a poisoned apple, which sends her into a deathlike sleep. The dwarfs place her in a glass coffin until a prince's arrival breaks the spell. The story is classified as Aarne-Thompson type 709, a group that includes other tales like "Bella Venezia" and "Gold-Tree and Silver-Tree."

Though the Grimms' version is the most famous, the seven dwarfs were not given individual names until the 1912 Broadway play Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Walt Disney's 1937 animated film introduced different names and a happier ending, cementing the story's place in pop culture. The original fairy tale remains darker, with the Queen forced to dance in red-hot iron shoes at the wedding. For centuries, "Snow White" has served as a cautionary tale about vanity, jealousy, and resilience, its symbols like the magic mirror and poisoned apple instantly recognizable worldwide.[edit]
