Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You

The manga follows a stressed salaryman who, after a hard day, sneaks to the back of his local supermarket for a cigarette. There he finds Yamada, the store's cheerful cashier, who is also secretly a smoker. Their shared hidden habit sparks an unlikely friendship built on brief, quiet moments away from their public lives. The story explores the comfort and intimacy found in these secret breaks, focusing on the gradual bond between two very different people.

Written and illustrated by Jinushi, the series started as a webcomic on Twitter in March 2022 and quickly went viral. It was picked up by Square Enix for serialization in Monthly Big Gangan in August 2022. As of January 2026, eight tankōbon volumes have been released. An anime adaptation by Asahi Production is set to premiere in July 2026.

The manga won the 2022 Next Manga Award in the web manga category, a major honor voted by fans and judges. Critics praise its character chemistry, relatable premise, and expressive art. It holds a high user rating on MyAnimeList, consistently above 8 out of 10.[edit]
