Smokie is a British rock group. They are known for their distinctive blend of pop-rock and soft rock, achieving significant international success, particularly in the late 1970s and continuing to be popular in Germany and Australia. Their greatest hits include "Living Next Door to Alice", "Lay Back in the Arms of Someone", and "I'll Meet You at Midnight". The band has released over 20 studio albums, with many reaching number 1 in Germany, cementing their status as one of the most successful foreign acts in German music history. Despite changes in personnel over the decades, Smokie remains an active touring and recording entity, performing their classic hits to devoted audiences across Europe and Australia as of 2024. The roots of Smokie trace back to Bradford, Yorkshire, England, in 1965. It was there that schoolmates Chris Norman, who would become the band's distinctive vocalist and guitarist, and Terry Uttley, on bass, first connected through their shared love for music. Together, they formed their inaugural band, "The Yen," enlisting drummer Ron Kelly and guitarist Alan Silson to complete the lineup. They experimented with their identity, cycling through names like Essence and Smokey, before their definitive breakthrough.

Their pivotal moment arrived when they attracted the attention of Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, the renowned songwriting and production team behind numerous 1970s chart-toppers. Impressed by their potential, Chapman and Chinn swiftly signed the band to RAK Records, marking the beginning of their professional career.

Under the guidance of their new mentors, Smokie (then still known as Smokey) released their debut single, 'Light of Love,' in 1975. This marked their official entry into the music scene. The band would formally adopt the spelling Smokie in 1976, prompted by the discovery that the name "Smokey" was already trademarked in the United States. There is no official lightstick; fans typically use standard glow sticks at concerts. A notable tradition is the annual 'Smokie Day' celebration in Bradford on the first Saturday of July. Fans often dress in 1970s glam rock attire at shows, and singing 'Living Next Door to Alice' along with the band is a staple of every concert.
