Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov opened his first distillery in Moscow during the late 1800s, creating a spirit that would eventually define the global vodka market. The family recipe gained fame for its charcoal filtration process, which produced an exceptionally smooth drink known as No. 21. When the Russian Revolution swept through the country in 1917, the business was nationalized and the family fled to Paris before Vladimir Smirnov moved the operation to New York City in the 1930s. This migration saved the brand from disappearing entirely and allowed it to rebuild under American ownership.

Today Diageo controls the label, producing bottles in facilities scattered across the globe while deliberately avoiding any manufacturing sites within Russia or Eastern Europe. This strategy helps maintain access to international markets despite complex geopolitical tensions. The company ships to more than 130 countries and continues to dominate sales figures, having held the number one spot globally since at least 2014.

While the original unaged vodka remains the core product, the portfolio has expanded significantly to include flavored vodkas like Strawberry & Rose and malt-based ready-to-drink beverages such as Smirnoff Ice. Recent years have seen the brand push hard into cultural moments and record-breaking stunts. In 2026, Smirnoff Ice hosted the world's largest hot dog party to celebrate America's 250th anniversary, featuring WWE star Mike "The Miz" Mizanin as a key promoter of the event. [edit]
