Sky Sports is a group of British subscription sports television channels operated by Sky Group, a division of Comcast. Sky Sports launched on April 20, 1991, following the merger of Sky Television and British Satellite Broadcasting into British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) in 1990. The new service began with coverage of top-flight football, cricket, golf, and motorsport, quickly establishing itself as a major player in sports broadcasting. Its arrival coincided with a period of upheaval in English football; the Premier League was formed in 1992, with BSkyB securing exclusive live rights in a deal that transformed the sport's finances.

In 1998, Sky Sports News launched as the UK's first 24-hour dedicated sports news channel, with Mike Wedderburn and Kelly Cates delivering the opening words.
