Overview
Origin Story
Skeletor's earliest origin in the 1981 minicomic He-Man and the Power Sword described him simply as a demonic sorcerer from another dimension. The 2002 Masters of the Universe reboot fleshed out a tragic backstory: he was once Keldor, the half-brother of King Randor and heir to the throne of Eternia. Denied his birthright because of his half-demon lineage, Keldor attacked Randor in a jealous rage. During the battle, a splash of acid disfigured his face, leaving him near death. Hordak, the demonic ruler of Despondos, saved Keldor and transformed him into the skeletal Skeletor, binding him to serve Hordak's will. The 2021 Masters of the Universe: Revelation refined this further, showing Keldor's pact with Hordak as a deliberate choice to gain power at the cost of his humanity.
Personality
Skeletor is defined by his grand ambition, theatrical cruelty, and obsessive hatred for He-Man. He is arrogant, believing himself superior to all others, yet prone to petty tantrums when his plans fail. His laugh is a high-pitched, maniacal cackle that signals both triumph and frustration. Despite his villainy, he possesses a twisted sense of honor and occasionally shows glimpses of vulnerability, particularly regarding his disfigurement and his rivalry with Hordak. He is a master manipulator who surrounds himself with sycophants like Beast Man, but he trusts no one fully, especially his lieutenant Evil-Lyn.
Story Arc
In the original 1980s Filmation series, Skeletor remained a static villain, always scheming to enter Castle Grayskull and always defeated by He-Man's strength. The 2002 reboot gave him a character arc as Keldor, exploring his jealousy and descent into villainy, and introduced his fear of Hordak. Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021) offered the deepest development: after He-Man's apparent death, Skeletor finally breached Castle Grayskull and absorbed its power, becoming the Skeletor King. But his triumph was hollow, he found no satisfaction. Later, when Hordak threatened Eternia, Skeletor sacrificed himself to destroy his old master, redeeming himself in a final act of defiance. In the DC Comics series, he sometimes allied with He-Man against greater threats like the Anti-Eternia version of himself, showing a pragmatic, if temporary, shift in allegiance.
