Overview
Ennki Hakari's Skeleton Knight in Another World takes the isekai genre in a delightfully undead direction. The story follows a nameless gamer who, after falling asleep at his computer, wakes up in a fantasy realm trapped inside the skeletal body of his MMO avatar. As Arc, a walking skeleton clad in knightly armor, he sets out to uncover the truth behind his transformation while navigating a world filled with magic, monsters, and political intrigue. The premise offers a fresh twist on the familiar trope of being reborn in another world: Arc must contend with the prejudices and fears his appearance inspires, all while hiding his true nature beneath a helmet.
Originally self-published on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in October 2014, the series was soon picked up by Overlap, which has released 10 volumes since June 2015 under its Overlap Novels imprint. The light novels, illustrated by KeG, run about 250–300 pages each, blending action, comedy, and fantasy worldbuilding. The series has spawned a manga adaptation by Akira Sawano, serialized on Overlap's Comic Gardo website since February 2017 and collected in 15 tankōbon volumes. Seven Seas Entertainment handles the English editions for both formats.
A 12-episode anime adaptation from Studio Kai and Hornets aired from April to June 2022, bringing Arc's adventures to the screen. A second season, produced by Aura Studio, is scheduled to premiere in July 2026. For fans of isekai looking for a protagonist who literally has a bone to pick, this series delivers plenty of sword-swinging action and a healthy dose of humor.
