ŠK Slovan Bratislava

Founded on August 24, 1919, as I. ČSŠK Bratislava, the club adopted its current name in 1953 and has since become the most decorated football entity in Slovakia. Based in the capital city, Slovan dominates the domestic landscape with more league titles and cup victories than any other side since independence. Their roots run deep through both Czechoslovakia and modern Slovakia, establishing a legacy that defines the nation's sporting identity.

The team's historic peak arrived in 1969 when they defeated FC Barcelona 3–1 to win the European Cup Winners' Cup final in Basel. This remains the only major European trophy won by a club from Slovakia or the former Czechoslovakia. The journey began in 1919 under the name I. ČSŠK Bratislava before evolving into ŠK Slovan Bratislava in 1953. For decades, the club served as a pillar of Czechoslovak football until the country split in 1993. Since then, Slovan has maintained an unbroken streak of dominance in the Slovak First Football League, winning numerous championships and cups while consistently representing the nation in European qualifiers.

A defining chapter unfolded in June 2026 when Ivorian legend Yaya Touré took the helm as head coach. His appointment marked his first official role managing a senior team and made him the first African coach to lead a club into the UEFA Champions League group stage. Under his guidance starting in the 2026/27 season, the squad achieved immediate success, including a dramatic extra-time victory over NK Celje to secure their place in Europe's elite competition.
