Sirius XM

Sirius XM Holdings Inc., known simply as SiriusXM, is an American broadcasting corporation headquartered in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It provides satellite radio and online radio services across the United States. The company was born from the 2008 merger of Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio, a move that initially faced fierce opposition from critics who argued it would create a monopoly. Sirius and XM countered that combining forces was the only path to survival for satellite radio. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved the merger 17 months after it was proposed, creating a company with 18.5 million subscribers and a deal valued at $3.3 billion (about $4.7 billion in 2024). Today, SiriusXM claims to be the largest audio entertainment company in North America, with roughly 34 million subscribers as of July 2022.

The company also holds a 70% equity interest in SiriusXM Canada, which provides Sirius and XM service north of the border. In January 2020, SiriusXM reorganized its corporate structure, making Sirius XM Radio Inc. a direct, wholly owned subsidiary of SiriusXM Holdings Inc. That move followed the 2019 acquisition of streaming music service Pandora, which broadened SiriusXM's reach beyond satellite into on-demand audio. Beyond entertainment, SiriusXM Radio serves as a primary entry point for the Emergency Alert System, allowing the company to broadcast national alerts. With a mix of commercial-free music, talk, sports, and news, SiriusXM has carved out a distinct niche in an increasingly crowded audio landscape. [edit]
