About
John Simon Ritchie (born Simon John Ritchie; 10 May 1957 – 2 February 1979), known professionally as Sid Vicious, was an English musician, best known as the second bassist for the punk rock band Sex Pistols. After his death in 1979 at the age of 21, he remained an icon of the punk subculture; one of his friends noted that he embodied "everything in punk that was dark, decadent and nihilistic".

Cause of Death
Accidental heroin overdose
The New York City Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death of Simon John Ritchie an accidental heroin overdose. Found unresponsive in his bed at Room 100 of the Chelsea Hotel shortly after midnight on February 2, 1979, Vicious was 21 years old. He had been released from Rikers Island just nine days prior while awaiting trial for the stabbing death of Nancy Spungen, a charge that prosecutors would dismiss the very next day. His final days were marked by a return to heavy drug use immediately following his release, leading to lethal levels of morphine and heroin in his system with no evidence of foul play regarding his own passing. The punk community reacted with immediate shock, cementing his status as a tragic martyr despite the chaotic circumstances surrounding his life.
Tributes remained largely informal and grassroots rather than institutional, though the media frenzy around the "Sid and Nancy" narrative surged in the years that followed. A private funeral service took place three days later at Golders Green Crematorium in London on February 5, attended by very few figures. Notable peers like Johnny Rotten and Steve Jones did not attend, citing tension and the stigma attached to the event. Posthumous releases included the album Sid Sings, featuring covers recorded before his death, while his legacy endured through cultural artifacts like the 1986 film Sid & Nancy. The handling of his estate remains opaque.
