Blackpink released "Shut Down" on September 16, 2022, as the second single from their second studio album Born Pink. Produced by Teddy and 24, with lyrics by Teddy, Danny Chung, and Vince, the track was recorded at The Black Label Studio in Seoul. It runs 2 minutes and 56 seconds. The song marked Blackpink's final single under Interscope Records before the group left the label in 2025.

Musically, "Shut Down" is a hip-hop song built around trap beats and a looped violin sample from Niccolò Paganini's 1826 composition "La Campanella." The violin was performed by Echae Kang. The lyrics dismiss haters and detractors, with lines like "Praying for my downfall, many have tried, baby" and "When we pull up you know it's a shutdown."

Commercially, the song became Blackpink's second number-one on the Billboard Global 200 and the first K-pop act to top Spotify's weekly global chart. Certifications include platinum in South Korea (Circle Chart) and Canada (Music Canada), gold in Australia (ARIA), Japan (RIAJ), and New Zealand (RMNZ), and silver in the UK (BPI).

Critical reception was mixed to positive. Critics praised the song's memorable production and assertive lyrics, calling it a career highlight, though some found the classical sample a tired K-pop trope. The music video, released on the same day, recreates scenes from Blackpink's earlier videos for "Playing with Fire," "Whistle," "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du," "Boombayah," and "Kill This Love." It also includes visual references to other YG Entertainment artists such as 2NE1 and BigBang.
