    About

Shueisha started in 1925 as the entertainment publishing division of Shogakukan and became an independent company on August 8, 1926. Founder Takeo Ōga set up shop in Hitotsubashi, Chiyoda, Tokyo, where the company remains headquartered today. Its very first publication, a novel called Jinjō Shōgaku Ichinen Josei, came out in collaboration with Shogakukan that same year.

Today Shueisha is the largest publishing company in Japan and the world's biggest manga publisher, commanding roughly 30 percent of the domestic market. Its crown jewel is Weekly Shōnen Jump, which launched in 1968 and has serialized titans like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto. The Jump brand extends to other magazines targeting different demographics, Weekly Young Jump for older teens and adults, Ultra Jump for seinen readers, and Non-no for fashion-conscious women. Shueisha also runs the digital platform MANGA Plus Creators, where anyone can submit and publish manga directly.

The company belongs to the Hitotsubashi Group, a keiretsu that also includes Shogakukan and Hakusensha. Together with those two, Shueisha owns VIZ Media, which brings Japanese manga to English-speaking readers in North America and Europe. Another joint venture, ShoPro (Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions), handles licensing and merchandising. In 2016, Shueisha created a dedicated Dragon Ball Room to manage and expand that massive franchise. Its strategy, as outlined in the 2025 Integrated Report, focuses on marketing Japan's assets globally, building an end-to-end framework to distribute Japanese works worldwide and bring revenue back home. The Netflix adaptation of its novel Tokyo Swindlers, which hit the Top 10 in 30 countries, shows that approach in action.
