Shoto Todoroki

Shoto Todoroki is the youngest of four children born to Enji Todoroki, the number two hero Endeavor, and Rei Todoroki. Endeavor arranged the marriage specifically to produce a child with a powerful quirk, seeking an heir who could surpass All Might. While Touya, Fuyumi, and Natsuo inherited only one parent's quirk or suffered from incompatibility, Shoto was born with Half-Cold Half-Hot: ice from his left side and fire from his right. From the age of five, Endeavor subjected Shoto to brutal training, isolating him from his siblings and pushing him beyond his limits daily. The abuse culminated when Rei, overwhelmed by the pressure, poured boiling water on Shoto's face, leaving a scar over his left eye. She was subsequently institutionalized, and Shoto grew to despise his father, vowing never to use his fire quirk as a rejection of Endeavor's legacy. Shoto initially presents as cold, aloof, and emotionally withdrawn, a direct result of his traumatic upbringing. He holds a strong sense of justice, though his early motivation is more about defying his father than helping others. Over time, he becomes more open and expressive, learning to trust his classmates and accept help. He is highly analytical in battle, often devising strategies on the fly, and possesses a dry, understated sense of humor that emerges around friends. Shoto's defining moment comes during the UA Sports Festival, where he faces Izuku Midoriya in the semifinals. Midoriya refuses to let Shoto win without using his fire, shouting that Shoto's powers are his own, not his father's. This breakthrough causes Shoto to unleash his flames for the first time, marking his first step toward healing. In the following arcs, Shoto learns to control his fire and integrates both sides of his quirk. The Paranormal Liberation War arc brings the Todoroki family crisis to a head: he confronts Endeavor about the past and later faces his eldest brother Touya, now the villain Dabi. Dabi's public broadcast revealing the family's abuse devastates Shoto, but he resolves to save his brother rather than defeat him. In the final war, Shoto battles Dabi alongside his family, cooling Dabi's self-destructive flames with his ice and ultimately sparing his life. He consistently places in the top three of official character popularity polls; in the 2024 poll, he ranked third with over 12,000 votes. Critics have praised his character arc, particularly the realistic portrayal of abuse and recovery. His design, dual-colored hair, scar, and stoic expression, has become iconic, inspiring extensive cosplay and fan art. Merchandise featuring Shoto, including figures, keychains, and apparel, remains widely popular.
