    About

SHINee debuted on May 25, 2008, as a five-member group under SM Entertainment, with the goal of redefining contemporary K-pop. Their debut EP Replay and its title track introduced a fresh sound that blended R&B with pop, setting them apart from other idol groups. They quickly became known for their synchronized dance routines and strong vocal abilities, earning the nickname 'Princes of K-pop.' Over the years, SHINee has released a string of successful albums, including Lucifer, Sherlock, Odd, and Don't Call Me, each showcasing their musical evolution.

The group has explored various genres, from the electro-pop of 'Ring Ding Dong' to the deep house of 'View' and the retro R&B of '1 of 1.' Their Japanese releases have also been well-received, with albums like Boys Meet U and I'm Your Boy topping Oricon charts. SHINee's influence extends beyond music; they have been trendsetters in fashion and have inspired a generation of K-pop artists. Despite the tragic death of member Jonghyun in December 2017, the remaining members have continued to perform and release music, honoring his legacy.

As of the mid-2020s, SHINee remains active, with members pursuing solo careers while also reuniting for group projects. Their 2021 album Don't Call Me was a commercial success, debuting at number one on the Gaon Album Chart and receiving positive reviews. SHINee's dedication to their craft and their ability to adapt to changing musical trends have ensured their lasting relevance in the K-pop industry.

    Formation Story

SHINee was formed by SM Entertainment through its rigorous trainee system. The members were recruited via auditions and street casting, then trained for several years in singing, dancing, and performance. Onew was cast in 2006 through an SM audition and trained for about two years. Jonghyun was discovered while playing bass at a music festival. Key passed a global audition in Daegu in 2005 and trained for three years. Minho was scouted on the street and appeared in a Girls' Generation music video before debuting. Taemin, a dance prodigy, joined SM at age 12 after an open audition.

The group was introduced to the public on May 22, 2008, on Mnet's M! Countdown, performing their debut single 'Replay.' Their official debut followed three days later with the release of the Replay EP. SM positioned SHINee as a 'contemporary band' focused on music, dance, and fashion, aiming to set trends rather than follow them.

    Musical Style

SHINee's music is rooted in contemporary R&B-infused K-pop, but they have expanded into electro-pop, deep house, synth-pop, funk, and experimental pop. Their early work, like 'Replay' and 'Love Like Oxygen,' featured smooth R&B melodies. By the time of 'Ring Ding Dong' and 'Lucifer,' they incorporated more electronic and dance elements. The 2012 single 'Sherlock' was notable for combining two songs into one, showcasing SM's hybrid remix style. Their 2015 album Odd marked a shift toward mature R&B and neo-soul, with the deep house track 'View' becoming a fan favorite. Later albums like 1 of 1 embraced retro new jack swing, while Don't Call Me leaned into hip-hop and trap. Throughout their career, SHINee has been praised for their strong vocal harmonies, experimental B-sides, and high-quality production.
