The origins of Sheffield Wednesday F.C. trace back to September 4, 1867, when it was formed as a football section of The Wednesday Cricket Club. The club was a founding member of the Football Alliance in 1889 and became inaugural champions of that league before joining The Football League shortly after. In 1992, Sheffield Wednesday was one of the twelve founding members of the Premier League. The club has a long history in the top two divisions of English football, though their last appearance in the top flight was in 2000.

Wednesday's history is marked by considerable success. They have won the top-flight league title four times, with their most recent triumph in the 1929–30 season. The club has also lifted the FA Cup three times, the last being in 1935.
