    Overview

WayForward's Shantae, released in 2002 for the Game Boy Color, stars a half-genie hero who must save Sequin Land from the pirate queen Risky Boots. This Metroidvania platformer tasks players with exploring interconnected zones, collecting magical items, and learning dance moves that transform Shantae into creatures like a monkey or elephant, each with unique abilities. The game's vibrant pixel art and tight controls were praised, but its late release, arriving a full year after the Game Boy Advance hit shelves, meant it was largely overlooked at launch. Capcom published the original cartridge, which now commands high prices among collectors. Despite poor sales, Shantae earned a cult following and is often cited as one of the GBC's finest titles. The game later spawned a successful franchise. Digital re-releases helped broaden its audience: the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console brought it to Europe for the first time in 2013, followed by a Nintendo Switch version in 2021 and PlayStation 4/5 ports in 2023. These releases introduced new players to the tight platforming, clever level design, and charming protagonist that made the original a hidden gem.

    Gameplay

Players guide Shantae through a large overworld map divided into distinct zones such as forests, deserts, and dungeons. The core loop involves exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving. Shantae attacks primarily with her hair, which can be upgraded in range and power. Magic is limited by a magic meter that depletes with each transformation and attack. The game features a day/night cycle that affects enemy behavior and NPC interactions. Gems serve as currency for purchasing items and upgrades from shops, and hidden Firefly tokens unlock new abilities. Unlike traditional genies, Shantae uses dance moves to transform into creatures: a monkey for wall-jumping and climbing, an elephant for smashing obstacles, a spider for creating webs, and a harpy for flight. Each form grants unique traversal and combat abilities essential for progression.

    Story

Sequin Land, a tropical world protected by a guardian genie, is home to Shantae, a half-genie serving as protector of Scuttle Town. Her peaceful life ends when the pirate queen Risky Boots raids the town and steals a powerful steam engine from the local inventor. Risky Boots intends to use the engine to power a massive weapon to conquer Sequin Land. Shantae travels through regions including the Oasis, Cackle Mire, and Spooky Mansion to gather magical items and allies. She eventually confronts Risky Boots in her fortress, defeating her and recovering the engine. The ending reveals the true antagonist was a dark genie using Risky Boots as a pawn. The final boss battle is against this dark genie, which Shantae defeats, restoring peace to Sequin Land.
