    Overview

Shangri-La Frontier is a Japanese web novel series written by Katarina, a pseudonymous author. It began serialization on the user-generated novel platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in May 2017, where it quickly gained a dedicated readership. The story was later acquired for print publication by Kodansha, with the first physical volume released in February 2021 under their KC Deluxe imprint. As of June 2026, the light novel series has 22 published volumes.

The story follows Rakuro Hizutome, a high school student who is a self-proclaimed master of 'trash games'—obscure, glitch-ridden video games that most players avoid. After conquering every broken game he can find, he decides to challenge himself with a critically acclaimed, mainstream virtual reality MMORPG called Shangri-La Frontier, which boasts 30 million registered players. He creates a character named Sunraku, a quirky bird-masked player with a unique skill build, and enters the game with no prior knowledge of its mechanics. Leveraging his unconventional problem-solving skills and experience with buggy games, Sunraku quickly makes a name for himself by defeating unique monsters, uncovering hidden lore, and interacting with a colorful cast of fellow players and NPCs. The narrative blends high-stakes action with humor and deep dives into game mechanics.

The series is primarily categorized as adventure fiction, fantasy, and an online game novel. Core themes include perseverance through adversity, the value of expertise in niche fields, friendship and teamwork, and the joy of mastering complex systems. It also explores the contrast between 'trash games' and 'polished games,' celebrating the unique skills cultivated by dedicated players. The series has been widely praised for its fast-paced action, detailed game-world building, and the charismatic protagonist. Critics have highlighted Katarina's ability to make the fictional game feel like a real, immersive MMORPG with authentic mechanics. The manga adaptation, illustrated by Ryosuke Fuji, has been particularly lauded for its dynamic art and fluid fight choreography.
