Shaman King

Shaman King is a Japanese manga series by Hiroyuki Takei that plunges readers into a world where shamans communicate with spirits and compete in the Shaman Fight, a tournament held every 500 years to crown the Shaman King, a being who can reshape the world. The story follows Yoh Asakura, a laid-back teenager from a family of powerful shamans, as he trains to harness his abilities, forge bonds with spirits like the legendary samurai Amidamaru, and face off against rivals in a high-stakes battle for the throne. Takei chose shamanism as his central theme because he wanted to explore a concept no manga had tackled before, blending supernatural action with a coming-of-age narrative.

Serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from June 1998 to August 2004, the original run spanned 32 tankobon volumes. In 2017, Kodansha acquired the rights and relaunched the series as 35 e-book volumes in 2018, later releasing them in print from 2020 to 2021. The manga has also seen a kanzenban edition and spawned spin-offs, sequels, video games, a trading card game, and merchandise. In North America, Viz Media first licensed Shaman King, serializing it in Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2007. Kodansha USA re-licensed it in 2020, releasing both digital and physical editions.

Two anime adaptations exist: a 64-episode series by NAS and Xebec that aired from 2001 to 2002, and a 52-episode remake by Bridge that ran from 2021 to 2022. The first anime was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment and aired on FoxBox. By March 2021, the manga had over 38 million copies in circulation in Japan. Critics and fans have praised the series for its unique premise and engaging characters, with both manga and anime frequently appearing in top-ten lists of their respective media.[edit]
