Overview
Netflix's Shahmaran opens with a young woman named Şahsu (Serenay Sarıkaya) returning to the remote village of her birth, hoping to confront the grandfather who abandoned her. What she finds instead is Maran (Burak Deniz), a brooding stranger who seems to know her before she introduces herself. Their connection is immediate and unsettling, and it soon becomes clear that it is tied to a legend older than the village itself: the snake queen Shahmaran, a figure half woman, half serpent, whose story has been passed down in whispers and warnings. Created by Pınar Bulut and directed by Umur Turagay, the series blends small-town mystery with fantasy and a slow-burn romance. The supporting cast includes Mert Ramazan Demir as Cihan, Saadet Işıl Aksoy as Lilit, and Olimpia Ahenk as Abra, each of whom seems to be guarding a piece of the truth. The show ran for two seasons and 14 episodes between January 2023 and August 2024, and it carries a TV-MA rating for violence and mature themes. Tone-wise, Shahmaran leans into atmosphere over action. The village feels isolated and watchful, and the fantasy elements arrive in fragments rather than spectacle. That approach won the show a modest but engaged following, though its 6.7 rating on IMDb suggests it did not fully convert casual viewers. For fans of myth-driven dramas with a gothic streak, it offers a moody, self-contained ride.
