Shadow and Bone

Eric Heisserer's adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse novels arrived on Netflix in April 2021 as a fantasy series that weaves together two distinct storylines from the books. The show follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a young mapmaker in the war-torn nation of Ravka, who discovers she is the Sun Summoner, a mythical Grisha with the power to summon light. Her emergence draws the attention of General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), the enigmatic leader of the Grisha military, who claims he wants to help her destroy the Shadow Fold, a swath of darkness that has split the kingdom for centuries. Meanwhile, in the bustling port city of Ketterdam, a crew of criminals led by the cunning Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter) is hired to kidnap her.

Filmed primarily in Hungary, the series blends Russian-inspired aesthetics with a modern sensibility, featuring over 1,000 hand-embroidered costumes in its first season. The show cast actors of diverse backgrounds, with Li of mixed Chinese and English heritage, Amita Suman of Indian descent, and Kit Young mixed-race, reflecting a deliberate push for inclusivity. Two seasons aired between 2021 and 2023, totaling 16 episodes, before Netflix canceled the series in November 2023. Despite its cancellation, the show earned a 7.8/10 on IMDb and was praised for its world-building, performances, and successful integration of characters from Bardugo's Six of Crows duology.[edit]

Ravka is a nation divided. The Shadow Fold, a barrier of impenetrable darkness teeming with winged volcra, has cut the country in half for centuries, making travel and trade nearly impossible. Alina Starkov, an orphaned mapmaker in the Ravkan army, has spent her life alongside her best friend Mal Oretsev, a tracker. During a dangerous crossing of the Fold, volcra attack their skiff, and Alina instinctively unleashes a blinding light that repels the creatures. This act reveals her as the Sun Summoner, a Grisha of immense power thought to exist only in legend.

Alina is taken to the royal court in Os Alta, where she is trained by General Kirigan, the leader of the Second Army of Grisha. Kirigan, also called the Darkling, is the most powerful Grisha alive and claims he wants to help Alina master her abilities to destroy the Fold and unite Ravka. But as Alina trains, she begins to sense that Kirigan's motives are not what they seem. The central tension of the series revolves around Alina's struggle to control her power, her loyalty to Mal, and her growing distrust of the man guiding her. Meanwhile, a parallel storyline introduces a crew of outcasts from Ketterdam: Kaz Brekker, a ruthless gang leader with a cane and a hidden past; Inej Ghafa, a spy known as the Wraith; and Jesper Fahey, a sharpshooter with a gambling problem. They are hired for a heist: kidnap Alina Starkov and deliver her to a mysterious patron for a massive reward.

Season 1 establishes the world of Ravka, the Grisha orders, and the Shadow Fold. Alina discovers her powers and trains under Kirigan while the Crows plot their heist. The two storylines converge as the Crows' mission brings them into direct conflict with Kirigan's plans. The season builds toward a confrontation that reveals the true nature of the Fold and Kirigan's centuries-long manipulations. Season 2 picks up immediately after. Alina and Mal are on the run, hunted by Kirigan's forces. They seek out the three mythical amplifiers, ancient creatures that can enhance a Grisha's power, to gain the strength needed to defeat Kirigan and destroy the Fold. The Crows return to Ketterdam, where they face new threats from rival gangs and a powerful merchant consortium. New characters join the story, including Prince Nikolai Lantsov, a charismatic privateer, and his bodyguards Tolya and Tamar. The season expands the political landscape of Ravka, leading to a climactic battle for the fate of the nation.[edit]
