    About

Sevilla Fútbol Club is a Spanish professional football club based in Seville, Andalusia, that competes in La Liga, the top flight of Spanish football. The club was officially founded in January 1890, with Scottish-born Edward Farquharson Johnston as one of its founders and first president, making it Spain's oldest sporting club solely devoted to football. The club's articles of association were formally registered on 14 October 1905 under the presidency of José Luis Gallegos Arnosa.

Sevilla are the most successful football club in Andalusia in terms of titles. Their major championship titles include one La Liga title in 1945–46, five Copa del Rey titles (1935, 1939, 1948, 2007, and 2010), one Spanish Super Cup (2007), a record seven UEFA Europa League titles (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020, and 2023), and one UEFA Super Cup (2006). They were also designated by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics as the World's Best Club in 2006 and 2007, the first club to achieve this distinction in two consecutive years.

The club's home ground is the 43,883-seat Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, located in the Nervión neighborhood of Seville. It opened in 1958 and is named after Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, who served as club president for 17 years. Sevilla has a long-standing and fierce rivalry with cross-city club Real Betis. The fan culture includes a yearly boat race on the Guadalquivir River between supporters of both clubs, though the rowing team is not an official club section but a call-up of registered professional rowers.

    History

Sevilla FC was founded in January 1890 by a group of Spanish and foreign residents, including Scottish-born Edward Farquharson Johnston, who became the first president. The club initially played friendly matches against other local teams. On 14 October 1905, the club's articles of association were registered, formalizing its structure. In 1935, Sevilla won its first Copa del Rey, defeating Sabadell 3-0 in the final. The club's first and only La Liga title came in the 1945-46 season under coach Ramón Encinas, finishing five points ahead of Barcelona.

The 1950s saw Sevilla consistently finish in the top five, led by coach Helenio Herrera. The club moved to the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium in 1958. The 1970s and 1980s were less successful, with the club often mid-table. A resurgence came in the 1990s, and in 2006, Sevilla won its first UEFA Cup, defeating Middlesbrough 4-0 in the final. This began a golden era: the club won five UEFA Cups/Europa Leagues between 2006 and 2016, and added a sixth in 2020 and a seventh in 2023, setting a record for the most titles in the competition.

Domestically, Sevilla won Copa del Rey titles in 2007 and 2010, and the Spanish Super Cup in 2007. The club's youth academy, known as the cantera, has produced top talents such as Sergio Ramos and Jesús Navas. In recent years, Sevilla has remained a consistent force in La Liga, regularly qualifying for European competitions. The 2022-23 season saw them finish 12th in the league but win the Europa League, defeating Roma on penalties in the final.
