About
SEVENTEEN debuted on May 26, 2015 with the EP 17 Carat and the title track Adore U. The group's name comes from the concept of 13 members, 3 units, and 1 team, which together add up to 17. From the start, they stood out for their self-producing capabilities, with members like Woozi and the Hip-Hop Team deeply involved in songwriting and production, and Hoshi leading choreography.
Their early releases, such as Boys Be and Love & Letter, established a bright, youthful sound that evolved over time. By 2017, songs like Don't Wanna Cry and the album Teen, Age showed a more mature direction, incorporating EDM and emotional pop. The group's popularity surged with each comeback, leading to their first million-selling album An Ode in 2019.
In the 2020s, SEVENTEEN achieved unprecedented commercial success. Their 2023 EP FML broke records with over 4 million first-week sales, and subsequent releases like Seventeenth Heaven continued to dominate charts. The group has also expanded globally, with successful world tours and a strong presence in Japan. They remain active under Pledis Entertainment, consistently releasing new music and connecting with their dedicated fandom, CARATs.
Formation Story
SEVENTEEN was formed by Pledis Entertainment through a pre-debut project called Seventeen TV, which aired online and showed trainees practicing and competing. The members were recruited through various means; some were scouted on the street or at school, while others auditioned online. S.Coups, Woozi, and Hoshi were among the earliest trainees, training for several years before debut.
The group's structure of three units (Hip-Hop, Vocal, Performance) was established during training, allowing each member to focus on their strengths. The debut was preceded by a reality show, Seventeen Project: Debut Big Plan, which aired on MBC Music and built anticipation. On May 26, 2015, they officially debuted with the EP 17 Carat, which featured the cheerful track Adore U. The album charted on Billboard's World Albums chart for several weeks, a rare feat for a rookie group.

Musical Style
SEVENTEEN's music spans a wide range of genres, from bright pop and funk to EDM, R&B, and hip-hop. Their early work, like Adore U and Mansae, was characterized by upbeat, catchy melodies and playful choreography. As they matured, their sound evolved to include more emotional and experimental elements, as seen in Don't Wanna Cry and Fear.
Production is heavily member-driven, with Woozi serving as the main producer and the Hip-Hop Team contributing lyrics and rap verses. The Performance Team, led by Hoshi, creates intricate choreography that complements the music. Their recent releases, such as Hot and Super, feature powerful, anthemic choruses and hybrid genres, showcasing their versatility and global appeal.
