Set in 1586 during Japan's Sengoku period, Seven Samurai follows a farming village that learns bandits will return after the harvest to steal their barley. Desperate, the villagers send a delegation to the nearest town to hire samurai. They find Kambei Shimada (Takashi Shimura), a veteran warrior who agrees to defend them for little more than three meals a day. Kambei recruits five more samurai, each with distinct skills and personalities, plus the eccentric Kikuchiyo (Toshirō Mifune), a wild man who claims to be a samurai but hides a peasant background.
Directed by Akira Kurosawa, this 1954 epic runs 3 hours and 27 minutes. Shot on a $2 million budget, it earned over $100 million worldwide. The film's mix of thrilling sword fights and quiet character moments set a new standard for ensemble storytelling. Kurosawa used multiple cameras and slow motion during battle scenes, techniques that influenced generations of filmmakers.
Seven Samurai has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.6 on IMDb. It has been restored in 4K and is considered one of the most influential films ever made, directly inspiring The Magnificent Seven (1960) and countless other works.

A poor farming village in 16th-century Japan lives in fear. Bandits on horseback have raided them twice, stealing food and supplies. The villagers overhear the bandits planning a third raid after the barley harvest. The village elder suggests hiring samurai for protection. Four farmers, including the pragmatic Manzō, travel to the nearest town to find warriors willing to work for food and lodging.
In town, they witness a samurai named Kambei Shimada rescue a child held hostage by a thief. Kambei shaves his head to disguise himself as a monk, then kills the thief. Impressed, the farmers approach him. Kambei initially refuses but relents when he sees their desperation. He agrees to help, and begins assembling a team.
Kambei recruits Gorobei Katayama, a calm and observant samurai. Next comes Heihachi Hayashida, a good-natured man who chops wood. The stoic swordsman Kyuzo joins after Kambei watches him defeat a rival in a duel. Shichiroji, an old friend of Kambei's, also signs on. The young, wealthy Katsushiro Okamoto pleads to join, and Kambei accepts him despite his inexperience.
The group has six samurai. Kikuchiyo, a loud, unkempt man, repeatedly tries to join. The others reject him, but he follows them to the village. There, he reveals a farmer's birthmark, and the villagers mock him. Yet his energy proves useful as he helps with preparations. Kambei eventually allows him to stay.
The samurai train the farmers in basic combat, building defenses and organizing squads. They burn a bandit camp after capturing scouts. Tensions rise as villagers resist leaving their homes. Rikichi, a farmer, discovers his wife among the bandits; she runs into a burning building and dies. Heihachi is killed trying to stop Rikichi. The loss deepens the samurai's resolve.
Kambei devises a strategy: divide the village into sectors, use the terrain, and fight from fortified positions. The bandits, led by a ruthless chief, attack in waves. The samurai and villagers hold them off, but the bandits are numerous and well-armed. The final confrontation approaches as the bandits prepare a massive assault.
