When the Phone Rings

MBC's When the Phone Rings opens on a marriage that looks perfect from the outside and feels like a cage from within. Baek Sa-eon (Yoo Yeon-seok) is the youngest spokesperson ever to stand at the presidential podium, a man whose entire public life is a carefully managed performance. His wife, Hong Hee-ju (Chae Soo-bin), has lived with mutism since a childhood accident and communicates through sign language, a detail that makes her invisible to the political machine circling her husband. Their union was arranged, and twelve episodes later it still has not thawed into anything resembling warmth. Then a kidnapper calls. The voice on the other end mistakes Sa-eon for someone else, and what begins as a wrong number spirals into a threat that forces the couple to actually look at each other for the first time in years. Creator Kim Ji-woon uses that premise to build a show that shifts between romantic drama, crime thriller, and a slow-burn mystery about who is really making the calls. Directors Park Sang-woo and Wi Deuk-gyoo keep the pacing tight across the 12-episode season, which ran from November 22, 2024 to January 4, 2025, with each installment clocking in around 1 hour 10 minutes. Heo Nam-jun plays Ji Sang-woo, a figure from Hee-ju's past who complicates the picture, while Jang Gyu-ri and Lee Doo-seok round out a cast that keeps the political and personal stakes tangled. The show earned an 8.278 rating from viewers on the strength of its central pairing and a plot that refuses to let either lead stay passive for long.
