Timeless

In October 2016, NBC launched a time-travel drama that wore its heart on its sleeve. Timeless followed three unlikely heroes, a history professor, a Delta Force soldier, and a computer scientist, as they chased a fugitive through American history. The show was created by Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke, two veterans of serialized television who wanted to blend historical education with high-stakes adventure.

The series stood out for its earnest tone and diverse cast. It tackled real historical events, the Hindenburg disaster, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the Salem witch trials, while weaving in a larger conspiracy about a secret society called Rittenhouse. The show was canceled after its first season, but a vocal fan campaign using the hashtag #RenewTimeless convinced NBC to order a second and final season of ten episodes.

At its core, Timeless was about the cost of changing the past and the bonds formed between people thrown into extraordinary circumstances. It earned a dedicated following and a reputation as a smart, family-friendly sci-fi series that didn't shy away from moral complexity.[edit]

A stolen time machine. A mysterious criminal. And three people who must work together to save history. That is the setup for Timeless, a show that sends its heroes hurtling through American history to stop a man named Garcia Flynn from destroying the country.

The time machine, called the Lifeboat, is built by Mason Industries, a tech company run by billionaire Connor Mason. Flynn steals the prototype and begins jumping to pivotal moments in the past. The U.S. government, through Homeland Security agent Denise Christopher, assembles a team to chase him using the Lifeboat's prototype. They recruit Dr. Lucy Preston, a history professor whose knowledge of the past is encyclopedic; Master Sergeant Wyatt Logan, a Delta Force operator trained for combat; and Rufus Carlin, a Mason Industries engineer who is the only person who can pilot the machine.

At first, the mission seems straightforward: catch Flynn and bring him to justice. But as the team travels from the 1930s to the 1860s and beyond, they discover that Flynn's motives are not purely destructive. He claims to be fighting a shadowy organization called Rittenhouse, a cabal of wealthy families who have manipulated world events for centuries. The team soon realizes that Rittenhouse is real, deeply embedded in American history, and that Flynn may be trying to stop them, even if his methods are violent and morally questionable.

The team faces a constant dilemma: should they preserve history as it is, or should they intervene to stop Rittenhouse? Each mission reveals more about the organization's reach. Lucy discovers that her own family has been part of Rittenhouse for generations, and that changes to the past are erasing her from existence. Wyatt struggles with the personal cost of time travel, including the death of his wife. Rufus, a Black man traveling through a racist American history, confronts the dangers of the past firsthand.

Season 1 builds to a climax where the team's understanding of Rittenhouse, Flynn, and their own roles is completely upended. They are forced to make an uneasy alliance with Flynn to stop a greater threat. Season 2 shifts the team's mission from chasing Flynn to actively dismantling Rittenhouse. They travel to new eras, the American Revolution, the Old West, the 1980s, each mission bringing them closer to the heart of the conspiracy. The season ends with a direct confrontation that resets the timeline and sets the stage for the series' bittersweet finale.[edit]
