The Strain

Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse brought a fresh, visceral take on vampire mythology to FX with The Strain, which ran from 2014 to 2017 across four seasons and 46 episodes. A Boeing 777 lands at JFK and goes dark. All window shades are drawn, the lights are off, and every communication channel is dead. The CDC dispatches Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his colleague Nora Martinez to investigate. Inside, they find nearly everyone dead except four survivors. The passengers appear to have died from a rapid-acting pathogen, but the symptoms don't match any known disease.

As Eph and Nora try to contain what they think is a virus, they cross paths with Abraham Setrakian, an elderly pawnshop owner who immediately recognizes the truth. Setrakian is a Holocaust survivor who first encountered these creatures in a Nazi concentration camp, where a sadistic officer named Thomas Eichorst served an ancient vampire known only as the Master. The infection is not a virus but a parasitic organism transmitted through a long, retractable stinger that emerges from the mouth. The infected transform into strigoi: pale, hairless, clawed beings with red eyes, superhuman strength, and a vulnerability to sunlight.

The outbreak spreads through New York City with terrifying speed. Eph teams up with Setrakian, rat exterminator Vasiliy Fet, and streetwise kid Gus Elizalde to fight back. They discover that the Master has orchestrated the outbreak as part of a centuries-old plan to conquer humanity. The Master is aided by billionaire Eldritch Palmer, who traded his humanity for immortality, and Eichorst, who serves as his lieutenant. Complicating everything, Eph is locked in a custody battle with his ex-wife Kelly over their son Zach. When Kelly becomes infected, Zach is caught between his father's desperate protection and his mother's transformation into a strigoi.

Season 1 establishes the outbreak and the initial response, ending with a failed assault on the Master's lair. Season 2 expands the scope as the city falls. The resistance develops a silver-based bioweapon while Setrakian searches for the Occido Lumen, a book containing the secrets to killing the Master. New allies join: hacker Dutch Velders and Mr. Quinlan, a Born strigoi who has hunted the Master for millennia. Season 3 turns New York into a battleground. The group splinters under betrayal and paranoia, and they discover a nuclear weapon as a potential final solution. Season 4 jumps nine months into a world where the strigoi have won. The Master has established the Partnership, forcing humans to collaborate or die. The resistance, now a shadow of its former self, must make a desperate final stand with the nuclear bomb.[edit]
