Smallville reimagines the Superman mythos as a coming-of-age drama, focusing on Clark Kent's teenage years in rural Kansas. The series premiered on October 16, 2001, and ran for ten seasons on The WB and later The CW, concluding on May 13, 2011. Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the show deliberately avoided Clark ever wearing the Superman suit or flying until the final moments, grounding the story in his formative years.

Tom Welling stars as Clark Kent, a farm boy discovering his extraterrestrial origins and extraordinary abilities. The cast includes Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, whose friendship with Clark slowly turns to enmity; Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, Clark's childhood sweetheart; and Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, Clark's best friend and keeper of his secret. Smallville begins when a young Clark Kent, adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent after crash-landing on Earth from Krypton, discovers he possesses superhuman strength, speed, hearing, heat vision, and near-invulnerability. The Kents raise him with strong Midwestern values, teaching him to use his powers responsibly while hiding his alien origins. The series is set in the fictional town of Smallville, Kansas, where meteor showers triggered by Clark's arrival have left behind kryptonite, a radioactive mineral that can harm him and mutate ordinary people into meteor freaks with bizarre abilities, providing a monster-of-the-week structure in early seasons.

Season 3 sees Clark embrace a darker side after being stranded on a deserted island, forcing Jonathan to make a deal with the Kryptonian AI Jor-El to save him. Season 4 introduces Lois Lane (Erica Durance) as a brash reporter investigating her cousin's death, while Clark searches for three Kryptonian crystals that unlock his destiny. Season 5 moves Clark to college and confronts him with Professor Milton Fine (James Marsters), the artificial intelligence Brainiac, who manipulates events toward devastating consequences for Clark's family. Season 6 shifts the action to Metropolis as Clark hunts escaped Phantom Zone prisoners, encounters the vigilante Green Arrow (Justin Hartley), and watches Lex and Lana's relationship deepen. Season 7 introduces Clark's Kryptonian cousin Kara (Laura Vandervoort) and pits Clark against Bizarro, a dark mirror version of himself. Season 8 transitions Clark to the Daily Planet as a reporter alongside Lois, introduces Doomsday as a world-ending threat, and sees Oliver Queen join the main cast. Season 9 raises the stakes with General Zod (Callum Blue) and his followers attempting to terraform Earth into a new Krypton, forcing Clark to embrace his role as a protector.
