    Overview

Stacy Rukeyser created this Netflix drama that explores the messy collision between domestic stability and unbridled desire. Sarah Shahi stars as Billie Connelly, a suburban wife and mother whose carefully constructed life begins to unravel when her wild ex-boyfriend Brad Simon (Adam Demos) reappears. Mike Vogel plays Billie's husband Cooper, a successful financier who finds himself competing with a ghost from her past. The show aired two seasons from June 2021 to March 2023, totaling 14 episodes, before Netflix canceled it. Rated TV-MA for explicit sexual content and language, the series leans into steamy fantasy sequences and emotional turmoil. Critics were divided, but audiences gave it a 7.1/10 on IMDb, with many drawn to its unapologetic exploration of female sexuality and the compromises of marriage. Based on the novel 44 Chapters About 4 Men by BB Easton, the show turns a memoir into a fever dream of what-ifs.

Billie Connelly lives a comfortable life in Westport, Connecticut. She has a handsome, successful husband named Cooper, two young children, and a beautiful home. But behind closed doors, something is missing. Billie gave up her PhD in psychology and her adventurous sex life when she married Cooper, and now she finds herself daydreaming about the man she left behind: Brad Simon, a magnetic nightclub owner who knew her before she became a wife and mother.

The story kicks off when Billie starts writing a secret journal chronicling her most explicit memories with Brad. Cooper discovers the journal, and instead of being merely hurt, he becomes obsessed with competing with Brad. He tries to match Billie's past sexual experiences, pushing the boundaries of their marriage. Meanwhile, Brad moves back to the area, and the three of them become entangled in a triangle that forces each to confront what they truly want. The first season unfolds through flashbacks, showing how Billie and Brad's relationship burned hot and then ended, while Cooper's jealousy spirals into dangerous territory.

Season 2 picks up after the fallout. Billie is single, co-parenting with Cooper, and trying to figure out who she is outside of a relationship. She explores new possibilities, including a brief reconnection with Brad and a budding romance with a woman named Gigi. Cooper also starts dating again, working through his own insecurities. The season shifts the focus from which man Billie will choose to whether she can choose herself. Billie's journey becomes about reclaiming her identity and her ambitions, not just her sexual desires. The show uses fantasy sequences to visualize her inner life, blending steamy daydreams with the grounded realities of divorce and motherhood. By the end, Billie must decide what kind of life she really wants to live.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Sex/Life is a guilty pleasure that leans hard into its steamy premise, but critics found its execution uneven, the show's explicit fantasy sequences are bold and entertaining, yet the plotting often feels soapy and the character development shallow. Sarah Shahi's committed performance elevates the material, but the series struggles to balance its erotic ambitions with genuine emotional depth.
