Mark Scout leads a team of office workers at Lumon Industries, a mysterious corporation that has perfected a procedure called severance. The surgery divides a person's memories into two distinct streams: their innie, who exists only inside Lumon's sterile office floors, and their outie, who lives a normal life outside with no recollection of work. The severed employees experience a literal split identity, their work selves having no knowledge of their outside lives and vice versa.

The story centers on Mark, a former history professor who undergoes the procedure to escape a profound personal tragedy. He becomes team leader of the Macrodata Refinement department, where employees stare at computer screens sorting numbers into virtual bins. His team includes Helly Riggs, a sharp-witted newcomer who immediately rebels; Irving Bailiff, a stoic veteran with hidden depths; and Dylan George, a sardonic coworker who takes odd pride in his work. Their manager is the perpetually cheerful and unsettling Seth Milchick, while the stern Harmony Cobel oversees the severed floor with an almost religious devotion to Lumon's founder, Kier Eagan.

When Helly's desperate attempts to escape force her outie to leave a message, a chain of events cracks open the sealed world of the severed floor. Mark begins to suspect Lumon is hiding far darker secrets than mundane corporate drudgery. Meanwhile, outside Lumon, Mark's outie encounters a woman who appears to be Ms. Casey, the severed floor's wellness counselor, living in the real world. The season finale ends on a dramatic cliffhanger with Mark's innie shouting a desperate message to his outie's sister.

Season 2 deepens the mystery as the consequences of the severance barrier being breached become clear. Mark and his coworkers face escalating dangers as they push further into Lumon's secrets. The season introduces new characters, expands the mythology of Kier Eagan and his cult-like legacy, and raises the stakes with threats from both inside and outside the severed floor. The season explores the ethical implications of creating a person who exists only to work and never experiences life.
