Ripper Street
United Kingdom"The law for the lawless."
Overview
Set in the grimy streets of Whitechapel just months after Jack the Ripper terrorized London, Ripper Street dives into the chaotic world of H Division. Created by Richard Warlow for BBC One and later distributed by Prime Video, this gritty period drama ran from late 2012 through October 2016 across six seasons. The series stars Matthew Macfadyen as Inspector Edmund Reid, a man haunted by his past, alongside Adam Rothenberg as the American ex-convict Homer Jackson and MyAnna Buring as Long Susan Hart, a widow who runs a local brothel while aiding the investigation. With 39 episodes totaling nearly 40 hours of runtime, the show blends crime mystery with deep character study to paint a vivid picture of Victorian England. Critics and audiences responded strongly to the show's unflinching look at police work during a time when modern forensics were just beginning to emerge. The cast brings depth to roles that could have easily become one-dimensional tropes, grounding the high-stakes murders in human emotion. Rated TV-MA for its graphic violence and mature themes, the series earned a solid 7.4 out of 10 rating on major platforms. It stands apart from other period pieces by focusing less on royal pomp and more on the squalor and resilience of the working class trying to survive in a city still reeling from the Ripper's reign of terror.
