    Overview

Birmingham, 1919. The Great War is over, but for Thomas Shelby, the fighting never stopped. He leads the Peaky Blinders, a Romani gang running illegal betting and protection rackets from the working-class streets of Small Heath. Creator Steven Knight drew on the real Peaky Blinders, a youth gang from the 1890s, but the show is a fictionalized epic about ambition, trauma, and family loyalty. Over six seasons, the Shelbys rise from local thugs to national players, crossing paths with IRA operatives, London mobsters, Russian aristocrats, and fascist politicians. The series aired on BBC Two for its first three seasons, then moved to BBC One from season 4 onward, with Netflix distributing internationally.

Cillian Murphy anchors the show as Tommy, a war veteran whose cold, calculating exterior masks a storm of psychological scars. His brothers Arthur (Paul Anderson) and John (Joe Cole) provide muscle and volatility, while aunt Polly Gray (Helen McCrory) runs the family's finances with fierce intelligence. The supporting cast is stacked: Tom Hardy's Alfie Solomons, a Jewish gang boss with a philosophical streak; Sam Neill's Inspector Campbell, a ruthless policeman; and Sam Claflin's Oswald Mosley, a charismatic fascist. Martin Phipps's score mixes haunting strings with modern rock tracks from Nick Cave, Arctic Monkeys, and Radiohead, giving the period setting a visceral, contemporary feel.

The show became a cultural phenomenon, known for its flat caps, razor blades, and slow-burn storytelling. It won a BAFTA for Best Drama Series in 2018 and earned consistent critical acclaim. Murphy's performance, in particular, drew praise for its quiet intensity. Filmed primarily in Liverpool and Leeds, with the Black Country Living Museum standing in for 1920s Birmingham, the series built a devoted global fanbase. A feature film is in development, set during World War II, to conclude the Shelby saga.

In 1919, the Shelby family runs the Peaky Blinders gang from their base at the Garrison pub in Small Heath, Birmingham. Thomas Shelby, a decorated but haunted World War I veteran, leads the operation with a mix of strategic brilliance and ruthless violence. His brother Arthur, the enforcer, struggles with his temper and wartime trauma. John, the hot-headed younger brother, seeks respect. Their aunt Polly Gray serves as the family treasurer and spiritual guide, reading tarot cards and dispensing Romani wisdom. Sister Ada Shelby, the family's intellectual, often clashes with Tommy's criminal methods. The family's illegal empire includes betting shops, protection rackets, and smuggling, all run with a strict code of loyalty.

Season 1 pits the Shelbys against Inspector Chester Campbell of the Royal Irish Constabulary, sent to Birmingham to recover stolen military weapons. The conflict escalates into a bloody turf war with the Lee family, a rival Romani clan. Tommy's ambitions grow, and by season 2, he expands into London's criminal underworld, forging a dangerous alliance with Alfie Solomons, a volatile Jewish gang boss. The London expansion brings him into conflict with the Sabini family, Italian gangsters controlling racetrack betting. Meanwhile, Campbell's obsession with Polly reveals a dark personal history.

Season 3 introduces the Economic League, a shadowy organization controlling British politics and industry. Tommy is drawn into a world of espionage, forced to work for the League against his will. The season ends with the family fractured by betrayal. Season 4 brings the Italian mafia to Birmingham as Luca Changretta arrives from New York to avenge his father's murder. The Shelbys must reunite to survive a full-scale mafia war. Season 5 shifts to the political arena: Tommy becomes a Member of Parliament and confronts the rise of fascism under Sir Oswald Mosley. His opium addiction and psychological demons grow. Season 6 finds Tommy at his lowest point, haunted by personal tragedy and facing a final confrontation with Mosley. The series consistently explores themes of trauma, class struggle, and the impossibility of escaping one's past, set against historical events like the Irish War of Independence, the General Strike of 1926, and the Great Depression.
