Marty Byrde, a financial advisor in suburban Chicago, discovers his business partner has been skimming money from the Navarro drug cartel. When cartel enforcers kill the partner and threaten Marty's family, he convinces the cartel to let him launder $500 million over five years from a remote location: the Lake of the Ozarks. He uproots his wife Wendy and their two teenagers, Charlotte and Jonah, from their comfortable life to a rundown lakeside motel.

Season 1 establishes the dangerous local ecosystem. Marty buys the Blue Cat Lodge and hires Ruth Langmore, a sharp young woman from a family of local criminals. He clashes with the Snells, a heroin-dealing couple who control the region, and FBI Agent Roy Petty begins sniffing around. Wendy, initially reluctant, discovers a talent for political manipulation. By the end, the Byrdes decide to stay and pursue a riverboat casino license.

Season 2 follows Marty's battle for the casino license against the Kansas City mob and the Snells. Wendy becomes an active partner, manipulating local officials. Ruth's father Cade is released from prison and causes chaos. Darlene Snell kills her husband Jacob and takes over their heroin operation. The season ends with the casino opening and the Byrdes deeper in debt to the cartel.

Season 3 introduces Omar Navarro, the cartel's new leader, and his attorney Helen Pierce. The Byrdes expand into a philanthropic foundation, laundering money through real estate and political donations. Wendy's bipolar brother Ben arrives and becomes a liability when he learns the family's secrets. The season builds to a devastating climax as the Byrdes choose the cartel over family, leading to Ben's death and Ruth's estrangement.

Season 4, split into two parts of seven episodes each, brings the story to its conclusion. The Byrdes face a new cartel enforcer, Javi, who is more unpredictable than Navarro. Private investigator Mel Sattem digs into Ben's disappearance. Ruth seeks revenge after Javi murders her cousin Wyatt. The family works toward full legitimization through their foundation, but their past sins threaten to destroy everything. The season explores whether the Byrdes can achieve the ultimate American dream: laundering not just money, but their entire family history into respectability.[edit]
