“GODANNAR is amazing. It manages to focus almost entirely on the characters by making the bad guys so flat that they're just a plot device.”

GODANNAR!!, known in Japan as Shinkon Gattai Godannar!!, is a 2003-2004 anime series that combines super robot action with romantic comedy and ecchi humor. The story centers on Goh Saruwatari and Anna Aoi, a newlywed couple who pilot a giant robot that requires both to work in perfect sync. Directed by Yasuchika Nagaoka and written by Hiroyuki Kawasaki, the series aired on AT-X for two seasons totaling 26 episodes.
The show is a loving homage to classic combining robot anime, but it adds an unusual twist: the robots fuse through a suggestive ritual that parodies the genre's conventions. The title, which translates to 'Marriage of God & Soul,' reflects the literal and metaphorical union of the couple. Despite its niche appeal, the series has earned a cult following for its energetic blend of action and domestic comedy.
Produced by OLM, known for Pokémon, the series features a cast including Mai Nakahara, Takayuki Kondo, and Mamiko Noto. Sentai Filmworks released the complete series on Blu-ray in 2019, making it accessible to Western audiences.

The story unfolds in a near-future Earth under constant assault from shapeshifting aliens called Mimetic Beasts. To fight them, humanity deploys giant robots known as Dannar units, piloted by elite soldiers. Five years before the series begins, pilot Goh Saruwatari rescues a young woman named Anna Aoi during a devastating battle, forging a bond that leads to their marriage.
The series opens on their wedding day, but the ceremony is interrupted by a Mimetic Beast attack. Goh rushes into battle in his tuxedo, and Anna, refusing to be left behind, discovers a hidden robot and pilots it into combat. Under extraordinary circumstances, their machines combine to form Godannar, a powerful fusion robot that requires both pilots to work in perfect harmony. Goh controls the upper half, Anna the lower.
The couple's emotional bond directly affects Godannar's power and stability. Their relationship, full of love, jealousy, and bickering, becomes the emotional core of the series. The show's signature comedic and ecchi element is the 'Dannar Coupling' sequence, a suggestive transformation ritual that parodies classic combining scenes.
Supporting characters include Goh's sister Shinobu, the mysterious maid Momochi, fellow pilots Lou and Lowe Roux, cheerful Konami Sasagure, and veteran commander Tetsuya Kouji. As the Mimetic Beast threat escalates, the team must work together while Goh and Anna navigate their new marriage.
Season 1 (2003) establishes the newlywed dynamic and introduces the full cast. Season 2 (2004) deepens conspiracy elements, introduces new mecha and enemies, and explores the couple's growth as pilots and partners. The series builds toward a climax that tests their unity like never before.
Critical Consensus
GODANNAR!! is a niche cult favorite within the mecha anime community, appreciated for its affectionate parody of super robot tropes, its unabashedly ecchi sense of humor, and its genuine romantic core. While it never achieved mainstream critical recognition and its production values show their age, fans of classic mecha series have embraced it as a fun, energetic, and emotionally sincere oddity.
