Dexter Morgan was adopted as a child by Miami police officer Harry Morgan after witnessing his mother's brutal murder. Recognizing the boy's homicidal urges, Harry created a code to channel them: Dexter would only kill people who were proven murderers themselves. This code became the foundation of Dexter's double life, with Harry appearing as a ghostly conscience throughout the series.

The show is set in Miami, where Dexter works alongside his colleagues at Miami Metro: his impulsive sister Debra Morgan, a detective who idolizes their father; Lieutenant Maria LaGuerta, his ambitious boss; Sergeant James Doakes, a suspicious officer who becomes obsessed with Dexter; Angel Batista, a kind-hearted detective; and Vince Masuka, the eccentric lab technician. Season 3 follows Dexter's dangerous friendship with Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado. Season 4, widely considered the show's peak, features Dexter's encounter with the Trinity Killer, a seemingly ordinary family man with a decades-long murder spree.

Season 5 deals with the aftermath of season 4's devastating events, as Dexter meets Lumen Pierce, a young woman seeking revenge. Season 6 introduces religious-themed killings by the Doomsday Killer duo. Season 7 brings Dexter's secret into the open when Debra discovers the truth. Season 8 introduces Dr. Evelyn Vogel, a psychiatrist who claims to have helped Harry develop the code, as Dexter confronts his past and a new serial killer known as the Brain Surgeon.
