    Overview

Criminal Minds premiered on CBS in September 2005 and quickly became a staple of network television. Created by Jeff Davis, the show follows the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), a team of elite profilers who use psychological analysis to hunt down the most dangerous serial killers, rapists, and terrorists across America. Over 15 seasons on CBS and a revival on Paramount+, the series has aired 354 episodes, with two more seasons already ordered.

The show's secret weapon was always its cast. Matthew Gray Gubler's Spencer Reid, a genius with an eidetic memory and three PhDs, became a fan favorite. Kirsten Vangsness's Penelope Garcia, the team's quirky tech analyst, provided warmth and comic relief. Joe Mantegna joined in season 3 as David Rossi, a founding BAU member, and Paget Brewster's Emily Prentiss evolved from a season 2 addition to a series anchor. The ensemble weathered major cast changes, Thomas Gibson was dismissed in season 12, Shemar Moore left in season 11, but the found-family dynamic endured.

Criminal Minds was never a critics' darling, Metacritic gives it a 56, but it earned a devoted audience that kept it on the air for 15 consecutive seasons. The show won the People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Crime Drama in 2017. Its revival, Criminal Minds: Evolution, shifted to a serialized format and premiered on Paramount+ in 2022, proving the franchise still had legs.

Each episode of Criminal Minds drops viewers into a crime in progress. Local law enforcement calls in the BAU, and the team profiles the unsub, unknown subject, by studying crime scene photos, victimology, and behavioral patterns. They race the clock to predict the killer's next move and stop another murder. The show's signature structure: a cold open showing the crime, the team getting the call, a briefing in the BAU's sterile Quantico office, on-location investigation, a profile reveal, and a tense takedown.

The original team had a distinct chemistry. Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) was the stoic unit chief who carried the weight of every case. Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin) was the brilliant mentor, haunted by a past tragedy. Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore) brought physical intensity and a protective streak, especially toward Reid. Jennifer Jareau (A.J. Cook) started as the media liaison and later became a field agent. Elle Greenaway (Lola Glaudini) specialized in sex crimes but left after season 2. The early seasons focused heavily on Gideon's mentorship of Reid, and the season 1 finale ended with a serial killer targeting the team.

Season 2 introduced Emily Prentiss, a diplomat's daughter with a mysterious past. Patinkin left abruptly after season 3, and Joe Mantegna's David Rossi, a BAU founder returning from retirement, filled the void. The show found its rhythm: case-of-the-week episodes punctuated by multi-episode arcs featuring recurring villains. Season 4 brought George Foyet, the Reaper, a serial killer who targeted Hotchner personally. Season 5 dealt with a cult leader, and season 6 saw major cast upheaval when Cook and Brewster were written out (Cook returned full-time in season 7, Brewster in season 12).

The show's mythology deepened in later seasons. Season 8 introduced the Replicator, a villain who copied past crimes. Season 10 gave Reid a devastating romance with Maeve, a woman he never met in person. Season 12 saw Gibson fired and Reid framed for murder, spending episodes in prison. New team members Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) and Matt Simmons (Daniel Henney) joined. The original series ended with season 15 in 2020, wrapping up the Chameleon storyline and sending Garcia off to a new job.

The revival, Criminal Minds: Evolution, changed the formula. Season 16 followed a single case: a network of serial killers connected through the pandemic, led by Elias Voit (Zach Gilford). Season 17 introduced a shadowy government conspiracy called Gold Star. The serialized approach allowed for deeper character development and a more novelistic feel, while keeping the profiling at the core.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Criminal Minds was never a critical favorite, often dismissed as formulaic and overly graphic, but it earned a loyal audience through its compelling character dynamics and genuinely unsettling cases. The ensemble cast's chemistry, particularly Matthew Gray Gubler's Reid and Kirsten Vangsness's Garcia, kept viewers hooked despite the repetitive structure.
